September 11, 2023 – Cape Henlopen State Park, DE

A one night stop here. While booking our trip originally, we made an error when it came to dog friendly sites. We had to make some changes to the Parks we visited. Cape Henlopen was about 3 hours from our last destination and the site was pet friendly.

It’s still very hot and humid (38C with humidex).

We stayed on site B04. Although the site was a little to close to our neighbours, the activities and opportunities the Park offered were great. Kilometres of bike trails, hiking trails, an Artillery Museum (xxxx), nature centre, and of course beaches on the Atlantic Ocean. Luke, Leia, and John finally returned to one of their favourite spots……the ocean. The water was warm and inviting.

September 07 – 11, 2023 – Elk Neck State Park, MD – Sites 168/13

Well this is a story to tell. We arrived here during an “unprecedented” heat wave in the area. This was the only campsite we did not have any electricity. When we booked it we had no idea that the weather would be so hot. 38C during the day, 28C at night.

Our first night was a challenge. The dogs were HOT, as were we. At 3:00 I had to bring Leia outside to cool down. I slept outside with her for an hour before we went back inside. Stephanie, the dogs and I all slept in separate areas trying to stay cool. Before we went to bed we decided we needed electricity and AC. The estimated temperature was 31C (humid 41C) during the day and 27 at night.

We had researched the local State Parks in the area and found that Killens State Park, DE had an electric site available. But miraculously Site 13 in this park became available….along with full service….including electricity. The $45 upgrade was worth every penny. The dogs spent the afternoon cooling down, as did we.

September 1-3, 2023 – 75 Pine Road, Colton NY

Thanks to the Pilla’s and the Bevans’ for a wonderful weekend at 75 Pine Road…Campsite #20.

We arrived Friday afternoon in almost perfect weather to start our annual summer/fall vacation. Three nights here then we move on to our next destination.

There is always time to relax, but we need to do some work too. Furniture moving, gravel relocation, and making sure the Seadoo is ready for use. On Saturday we joined the Pilla extended family for supper as they celebrated Lynne’s 29th birthday. Hot dogs and Hamburgers, along with 2 chocolate cakes, and coconut cream pie to celebrate. Followed by a great campfire, and discussion on electric cars!

Algonquin Park – Mew Lake April 20-23, 2023

This was a first for us. Camping in Algonquin Park – Mew Lake Site 16 in April! Our earliest visit before that was into the interior, probably mid May. My guess would be Stratton Lake. We arrived on Thursday with some nice sun. On arrival we found that our chosen site was quite wet. Stephanie had quick look around at the other sites and the park booking system to see if we could move….surprisingly the campsite was completely booked for the weekend. The rain continued on Friday off and on. We took a trip to the West Gate and Oxtounge Lake, stopping at one of our favourite stores – Algonquin Outfitters. The rain showers continued Saturday as we went to the Visitors Centre and the Spruce Bog trail. We did not complete the trail because the dogs became soaked very quickly. Sunday was backup day. While Stephanie walked Luke and Leia, I “endured” the snow showers, then rain as I packed up the outside of the camper. We were worried about the ruts we were going to leave when we left, but we were reassured by the Campsite Host, that it did not matter. All in all it was great to camping!

January 13, 2023 – Progreso, Mexico

Another travel day. We were up and at ’em at 06:15 in the morning. Our bus from Cancun to Progreso was due to depart at 07:30. We met up with Aunt Carole and travelled the 4 hours to our destination. Because of some of the new construction, it took us an hour and a quarter just to get out of Cancun. A family friend kindly picked us up at Merida – Altabrisa, and ferried us Mom and Stan’s house. For dinner we chose a restaurant, that supports a dog rescue called Gingers’ Jungle. Food was great!

January 12, 2023 – Cancun, Mexico

We are finally back! its been about 5 years since we were last here.

It started with a very early morning, Ginette our very good friend and dog sitter volunteered to bring us to the airport at the very early hour of 03:30. Our flight was scheduled to leave at 05:35. All went well with security and check-in. The flight was uneventful and we arrived in Cancun at about 10:30. Because it was already a long day we decided to stay one night in Cancun before heading to Progreso. The Hotel Plaza Caribe, is right across the street from the bus station and makes the perfect spot to stay…for one night anyway. Stephanie and I went for a 2 hour walkabout, to refresh our memories where everything was. In the afternoon we spent some time by the pool with a couple of drinks. We enjoyed some authentic Mexican street food with my Aunt Carol (she was on the same plane as us) before heading to bed.

September 30, 2022 – Hurricane Ian

Hurricane Ian – September 30, 2022

A small blip in our travels. We have decided to stay here at Virginia Beach State parks instead of heading out to the Outer Banks. Although the storm may be over by the time we were to travel though, cleanup will be on going. Its suspected that the ferries will also be put on hold for a few days. Alas, we will make it there again sometime. Our stops on the Outer Banks were to include the Hatteras KOA, a ferry to Ocrachoke, 2 nights at Ocracoke State Park and another ferry back to the mainland before we head to Myrtle Beach

September 19-22, 2022 – Dalewood Conservation Area

Site 108 in the Dalewood Conservation Area. This part of the park seems to be one of the better ones. It’s close to a bathroom facility as well being amongst the seasonal sites, so its quite quiet. We have camped here many times, and we enjoy it.

Our main goal for this trip was to visit Stephanie’s Grandfather. He is 93, and although he is still very active, he is in poorer health.

We certainly enjoyed dinner with cousins Tom and Jennifer, Kelly and her friend Tim, and 2nd cousin Leah. Tom smoked some roast on the smoker. It was delicious!

Day 2 – A visit with Stephanie’s Grandfather Austin. He is doing well for his age, but has some serious medical issues. We were to have him at the campsite for lunch, but the weather decided otherwise. We met him at one of his favourite restaurants “Robbies” for a fish and chip lunch. After he and Stephaine showed my the grounds of his new retirement home. It was quite impressive.

September 18-19, 2022 – Earl Rowe Provincial Park

It’s only been a year since we stayed here. This time it was only for one night. Site 233.

Usually I don’t pre occupy myself about getting some sort of satellite reception, but this time it was important. Luckily our site allowed us access to the the Bell system so we could watch the Queens’ funeral. I was up at 5am watching the pomp and ceremony while Stephanie and the dogs listened from bed. Stephanie woke up in time for the important stuff. We watched everything while we had breakfast and packed, ready to travel to the next destination, St Thomas. ON – the Dalewood Conservation Campground.
